But do we Truly?
It could be that we have been incorrect from the very beginning. Genesis 1:28 King James Version (KJV)
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
What does this mean? I will discuss this along with how “The Holy Spirit” has been involved with this struggle from the beginning, through redemption and now, in the last days.
KJV Dictionary Definition: subdue subdue
SUBDUE, v.t.
1. To conquer by force or the exertion of superior power, and bring into permanent subjection; to reduce under dominion. Thus Cesar subdued the Gauls; Augustus subdued Egypt; the English subdued Canada. Subduing implies conquest or vanquishing, but it implies also more permanence of subjection to the conquering power, than either of these words.
I will subdue all thine enemies. 1 Chronicles 17.
2. To oppress; to crush; to sink; to overpower so as to disable from further resistance.
Nothing could have subdud nature to such a lowness, but his unkind daughters.
If aught were worthy to subdue the soul of man.
3. To tame; to break by conquering a refractory temper or evil passions; to render submissive; as, to subdue a stubborn child.
4. To conquer; to reduce to mildness; as, to subdue the temper or passions.
5. To overcome by persuasion or other mild means; as, to subdue opposition by argument or intreaties.
6. To overcome; to conquer; to captivate; as by charms.
7. To soften; to melt; to reduce to tenderness; as, to subdue ferocity by tears.
8. To overcome; to overpower and destroy the force of; as, medicines subdue a fever.
9. To make mellow; to break; as land; also, to destroy, as weeds.
subdued
SUBDUED, pp. Conquered and reduced to subjection; oppressed; crushed; tamed; softened.
The word conquer comes to the surface often. What or who is it that we are to conquer? The Lords prayer clearly states that our mission is to be a part of bringing God’s Kingdom to earth. The enemy is sin and evil. Could it be, we are in a battle to help subdue sin and evil with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Let us not look at all sin and evil on earth, but simply one person that needs and wants help. Indeed, one by one with all of Gods army, sin will be subdued. This, in part will be the work of the Holy Spirit and Gods believers.
Works of the Holy Spirit in the beginning:
Genesis 1:1-2 King James Version (KJV)
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
The Holy Spirit had a part in creation. Genesis 1:2 says, “The Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Job says, “The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty has given me life.” The Scriptures ascribe the work of creation to God the Father, God the Son, and also to the Holy Spirit.
The difference between original man and fallen man was the absence of The Holy Spirit.
It was the Holy Spirit filling man that allowed for the communion with God on an ongoing basis. God and man shared the same spirit. Man, was directed by God. It was good.
With the fall of man The Holy Spirit partially departed from man. The moment of mans fall, sin and evil filled man and The Holy Spirit could no longer exist completely within man. Man was now in a natural state, and needed to be restored to God. But how? For us it is thousands of years, for God the plan was established in a twinkle. God was the architect of the plan, The Holy Spirit the enabler of the plan and The Lord Jesus Christ the redeemer.
The Holy Spirit was involved with the writing of the Holy Scriptures. He kept the writers from error as they penned the Bible. Holy men were inspired and called by the Holy Spirit.
Moses turned miracle after miracle to encourage Pharaoh to free his people. The super natural strength in Moses came from The Holy Spirit.
Isaiah 63:10-11–But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them. 11–Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?
The Holy Spirit enabled man with prophesy, visions and knowledge that only God would have. The Old Testament has many examples:
1 Samuel 19:20-24, 2 Chronicles 24;20, Ezekiel 11:24, Numbers 22-24,Numbers 11:29, Ezekiel 11:5, 2 Samuel 23:2-3 and Joel 2:28-29.
All that is spiritually led in the Old Testament is but the groundwork for that wonderful act of Redemption that our Lord Jesus Christ fulfills.
Work of The Holy Spirit Thru Redemption
When we talk Redemption, we talk Jesus Christ. Only because of the act of our Lord Jesus Christ can we be saved. The Holy Spirit was there from the beginning.
Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
The Holy Spirit was with Lord Jesus on the path to the cross.
Baptism
And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased” (Luke 3:22).
Temptation
Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness (Luke 4:1).
The Lords Ministry
Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and the news of Him went out through all the surrounding region (Luke 4:14).
Jesus own words
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed . . . Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing (Luke 4:18,21).
Resurrection
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you (Romans 8:11).
It is very clear that The Holy Spirit had much to do with the Resurrection. When we see how God, Lord Jesus, and The Holy Spirit work to complete the mission, it helps us understand the Trinity. Three separate, one mission.
Work of The Holy Spirit in these Last Days
It is possible that in these last days The Holy Spirit is working overtime. The job of expanding knowledge and wisdom to believers falls with The Spirit.
I remember being a child in the 50’s watching Walt Disney on Sunday nights and the amazing peacock with colored feathers. How about that little character called Jiminy Cricket. I guess that would have been Disney’s idea of The Holy Spirit. Jiminy’s job was to be a conscience and convict folks of their wrongdoing.
That has been one of the areas of the Holy Spirit since the beginning. I guess even Walt understood about The Holy Spirit, just uncomfortable giving the credit to God.
Conviction helps us become aware of our sinful nature. Only by awareness can we repent and ask for forgiveness.
The Holy Spirit helps lead us to find belief and rebirth and joins us when that mission has been accomplished. As we evict sin and evil thoughts from our body and spirit, The Holy Spirit fills the void. He will be with us as our guide and advisor. It is important to note: The Holy Spirit cannot inhabit space filled with sinful thoughts. If you think the Spirit has abandoned you. Re-examine your life and thoughts. Repentance is not a one-time deal in this world. It is a daily working effort.
Conclusion
Pride and vanity. These two simple sins seem harmless, but are they?
The holy Spirit Exists and wants to help us find our salvation.
The words from the movie Jerry Maquire come to mind. “Help me to help you”
We might think, I’m a good guy. I follow the rules and try to be fair to people. I try to be at least as good as they are to me.
That’s all good, but when we have been convicted of all our sins and repent from the heart. We then can truly ask for our Lords forgiveness. The Holy Spirit can then find a void to fill with his love and direction.
Can you remember as a child, sitting in front of that TV set watching Jiminy Cricket sing the song “Give a little whistle”. It just seemed right.
Even as a child you knew right from wrong and it was kind of neat to have a Jiminy Cricket on your shoulder. You kind of loved that character.
Kick that Pride and Vanity out, repent, ask for forgiveness and find The Holy Spirit. He is real and ready to help.
The Lord loves you and wants you to join his spirit.
